History permeates the Charles Inn, which, with
its elegant verandas, is a fine example of Georgian
architecture. Built in 1832 by Charles Richardson, a member of
Parliament for Niagara, it was later bought by Robert Gooderham,
whose father founded Toronto’s Gooderham and Worts Distillery.
The rooms have recently been renovated, but they retain the
feeling of a historic manor house - albeit it with modern
amenities such as sumptuous bed linens and whirlpool baths.
Niagara’s reputation as one of Ontario’s prime agricultural
regions is evident from the menu which showcases regional
produce and local wines served in the Olde Town Dining room, the
inn’s former parlour. Within walking distance is
Queen Street with its dozens of specialty shops and theatres,
home of the Shaw Festival, one of Canada’s leading cultural
events. Cyclists and walkers can enjoy the nearby Niagara River
Recreation Trail, a scenic path along the waterway.

Completely refurbished in 2004, each of our twelve guestrooms has
been beautifully decorated and is unique in size, décor and
amenities. You will feel perfectly relaxed and will be impressed
by the Inn's immaculate attention to detail, exquisite taste and
style. Many of the rooms have wood burning or gas fireplaces;
glass enclosed multi-head showers or whirlpool or claw foot tubs
and private verandahs to enjoy the view of the golf course, main
street or Lake Ontario. Each feathertop bed promises a luxurious sleep in
300 count linens, down duvets and down pillows.

The
dining room is located in the old parlour and still
features its original crystal chandeliers. The room is now
painted a warm persimmon colour and offers comfortable
upholstered banquettes and wing back chairs along with the more
traditional dining chair. Whether taking afternoon tea and
scones or savouring a multi-course meal prepared under the
culinary direction of Chef William Brunyansky, dining at The
Charles is always special. Our wine list features the best that
Niagara has to offer including a wonderful selection of ice
wines to accompany that special dessert. During the warmer
months, a candle lit dinner can be enjoyed on the side verandah
which overlooks the gardens and the golf course. After dinner,
guests are welcome to enjoy a glass of port or ice wine or
perhaps a specialty coffee in the adjoining lounge or sit on the
verandah to enjoy the evening sky. The dining room is open seven
days a week.

The First Capital of Upper Canada,
Niagara-on-the-Lake has, is also known as home of the Shaw Festival,
an internationally acclaimed producer of the
works of George Bernard Shaw and his
contemporaries. If golf is your game,
Niagara-on-the-Lake offers the oldest golf
course in North America (golfers actually play in
the shadow of Fort Mississauga, one of North
America's earliest battlements), not to
mention some 20 world-class courses within a
short drive.
From the front door of The Charles,
cyclists can set off on the picturesque
off-road Niagara Parkway trail that will
take the energetic rider through Niagara
Falls, all the way to Fort Erie. Wine and
culinary aficionados will want to spend days
touring the vineyards, wineries and
restaurants, by bike, car or group tour. And
when all the energetic activities are
exhausted, take a quiet amble down dozens of
tree-lined streets, past the carefully
restored homes and businesses of Canada's
founders. |
