The first capital of Upper Canada,
Niagara-on-the-Lake has, in recent
years, become known as home of the Shaw
Festival, an internationally acclaimed
producer of the works of George Bernard
Shaw and his contemporaries. If golf is
your game, Niagara-on-the-Lake offers
the oldest golf course in Canada
(golfers actually play in the shadow of
Fort Mississauga, one of North America's
earliest battlements), not to mention
some 20 world-class courses within a
short drive.
Cyclists can set off on the
picturesque off-road Niagara Parkway
trail that will take the energetic rider
through Niagara Falls, all the way to
Fort Erie. Wine and culinary aficionados
will want to spend days touring the
vineyards, wineries and restaurants, by
bike, car or group tour. And when all
the energetic activities are exhausted,
take a quiet amble down dozens of
tree-lined streets, past the carefully
restored homes and businesses of
Canada's founders.
